Proud Mom: Robert is in the Newspaper!

By Helen | January 13, 2008

I know I told you all about Robert’s incredible achievement of bowling two 299 games in less than three weeks.  The Asbury Park Press called to interview him!  Yesterday, there was an article in the paper - woo hoo!!!!

Here’s the article that was printed in the Saturday, January 12, 2008 Asbury Park Press:

Toms River North’s Onulak rolls a pair of 299 games

BY Justin Sauer • STAFF WRITER • January 12, 2008

For the second time in less than three weeks, Toms River North’s Robert Onulak was left disappointed.

On Dec. 21 in a Shore Conference Class A South match against Lakewood, Onulak had an opportunity to roll his first career 300 game, but he fell short after leaving the No. 7 pin standing in the 10th frame.

In a strange turn of events, the senior found himself in a similar situation at the Brick/Brick Memorial Tournament on Jan. 5.

That day he reached the 10th frame with another chance to record a perfect game. This time he left the No. 10 pin.

“He rolled a great ball right in the pocket,” Toms River North coach Chris Morley said. “I really thought that he was going to get that final strike and record that 300 game that has been eluding him.”

With a pair of 299 games under his belt, Onulak is carrying a 219 average through the first 20 matches this season and is a major reason why the Mariners are in fourth place in the always competitive Class A South.

Onulak, who attended an intense three-day bowling camp at Wichita State University over the summer, came into this season determined to make a bigger impact on the team.

“Over the summer I changed my shot completely,” Onulak said. “I went from a four-step to a five-step and I’ve seen great improvement so far this season.”

After missing out on a pair of 300 games by the slightest of margins, Onulak would like to cap his senior season with a 300 game.

“I’ve rolled two 299 games and I’ve shot a few 270s, but I’ve yet to roll a 300,” Onulak said. “It would be nice if I could roll a perfect game before I wrap up by high school career.”

Mom’s notes:  We’re now all cheering him on and hope to see him roll that 300 game!

Hey there - congratulations on your son - you must be very proud.

Seeing APP made me homesick for NJ. I grew up in NJ summers as my family’s from there. I grew up going to the beach in Avon. My brother lives in the area so does some of my family.

Brenda, if you ever get a chance to visit NJ, let me know. I know where Avon is. I grew up in Oakhurst - not too far from there.

Yes, we are very proud of him and hoping to see him roll that perfect game.
