Create Your Own Home Decor Wall Art for Fall

By Helen | September 12, 2010

I love to create my own Home Decor Wall Art – it gives me lots of flexibility to change things up and decorate for the seasons.  I also enjoy making these as gifts for my Hostesses, family and friends.

The Heart 2 Heart Challenge this week is a color combination – Autumn Terracotta, New England Ivy and Honey.

I love this color combination and it works perfectly with my fall theme.

Directions:

Using the Finishing Files, clean up the edges of a page from the All-Sorts Mini Album.  This will form the base for the wall art.

Place the page face down on the reverse side of the patterned paper you want to use to cover the page.  Use a cutting knife to cut the shape.  Tip: Don’t adhere the paper to the page yet…this way, if you want to add brads or other embellishments that pierce through the patterned paper, you can hide the back.

I chose the Large Floral paper from the Grace Level 2 Paper Pack.  The reverse side is a percentage of Honey.  Using a Sponge Dauber and Honey ink, softly distress all edges, blending in onto the paper.

What do you do when you want another piece of patterned paper that’s not readily available…improvise!  I pulled out the Multi-Stripe paper from the Zippidee Level 2 Paper Pack.  The reverse side has variations of Honey.  To spice it up a bit, I added thin strips of Autumn Terracotta and New England Ivy cardstock.

Mat the stripe piece with New England Ivy cardstock (edges swiped on a New England Ivy ink pad) and then Autumn Terracotta cardstock (edges inked with a Sponge Dauber using Autumn Terracotta ink).  Note: Experiment with the different types of distressing – each gives its own unique look.  I love combining different methods.

Add tan large gems from the new Opaques Mocha Adhesive Gems.  Note: There are three colors in the Opaques package: brown, tan and light tan.

Using New England Ivy, stamp the sentiment from The Present stamp set, in the middle of a Colonial White panel.  Using Autumn Terracotta and 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation stamping, add the leaf fronds.  Add brown Opaque Mocha Adhesive Gems to form a small flower and as added accents.

For decoration I wanted to use the folded flowers that I’ve been seeing used in a lot of artwork.  These flowers remind me of when I worked at the florist and we made Money Trees.  Tip: A Money Tree makes a great baby shower, bridal shower or birthday gift – just follow the same technique (minus inking) and tie to branches – so much fun to open and discover the bill denominations.

Using a Sponge Dauber and Honey ink, softly distress the edges of a 2.5″ x 6″ strip of Diamonds paper from the Zippidee Level 2 Paper Pack, again, this is the reverse side…then, ink the edges directly from the ink pad.

Using the paper trimmer and embossing stylus, score the paper every 1/4″.  Tip: Fold as you go – this enables you to line up the next fold at the 1/4″ mark, then lift the paper up to make the next score line.

Now, accordion fold the paper and tie in the middle with a piece of embroidery floss.

Coax open the flower.  For the wall art, I want the flowers to stay as a complete circle, so I added glue to the outside petals and pulled the two sides together to make a full flower.  Add Opaques Gems for the center.

Create a small flower using a 1.5″ x 6″ strip of Zippidee Diamonds paper.  Distress, accordion score, fold and tie off as before.

Cut scant 1/8″ strips of New England Ivy cardstock.  Using the same motion as you would with curling ribbon, use the needle part of the piercing tool to curl these strips.  Tip: The piercing needle is rounded, thus, it won’t score or cut the paper as you pull it.

For the flower buds, use a strip 1″ x 3″ strip of Zippidee Diamonds paper.  Distress, accordion score and fold.  Use a 1/8″ wide strip of New England Ivy cardstock to create the bottom of the flower bud.  Tip: Attach the curly vines to the flower buds when you wrap the flower bud – saves a step!

Stamp two Autumn Terracotta leaves from the Flourished Blessings stamp set and two New England Ivy leaves on Colonial White cardstock.  Cut out.

Attach the sentiment panel to the upper right using 3D Foam Tape.

Add a piece of Buttercup Organdy Ribbon.  Tip: Fold the ribbon in the middle, this will allow the ribbon to hang flat against the wall. Tip: Secure the ribbon to the back of the patterned paper, then attach the patterned paper to the All Sorts Mini Album page – this hides the ends of the ribbon between the layers.
