Scrapbook Challenge 64 – Masculine Scrapbook Layout

By Helen | June 20, 2010

In keeping with today’s Father’s Day theme…I created a layout that would be perfect to capture photos of Dad or any other men in your life.  I can also see this layout used for photos of hunting, camping, hiking in the outdoors, travel near or far and much more.

I fell in love with the layout on page 63 of the CTMH Summer Idea Book and used that as a springboard for this week’s Scrapbook Challenge.  This week’s Scrapbook Challenge is a combination to two patterns from the Reflections how-to book:  Title Topper – Pieced Together on page 16 and Front & Center – Mosaic on page 73.

This layout uses a variety of behind the scenes tricks and techniques…so let me explain.  You know me…I’m all about maximizing the use of paper…for the word paper on the left page, since most of it is hidden, I cut out the middle.  To do this, line the cutting blade up with the 3/4″ mark on the paper trimmer. Note: The Fiskars Paper Trimmer has the little arrows on the side of the cutting blade, making it easy to line up as shown.

Cut from the 3/4″ mark down to 3/4″ from the bottom edge.  Turn the paper and repeat.  Keep going until you’ve cut out the middle…like this…

Using the Brown Bag ink pad, suede the Brown Bag Cardstock.  Tip: When sueding, make sure you’re working on a completely flat surface and lightly hold the ink pad. In the This One’s for the Guys episode of Art & Soul, Monica teaches you how to suede…although they call it leathering – it’s the same technique.

Here’s the cardstock after sueding.

For the scalloped Cocoa Cardstock pieces, I started with a piece 5/8″ wide and 12″ long.  Remove the bottom guide from the Corner Rounder.  Now, you can push the Corner Rounder flush to the cardstock to get a “scalloped bite.”  When you go to line up the next and subsequent punches, line them up so that the edge is just slightly overlapping.  Tip: If you find you’re leaving extra wedges behind, it’s because you’re not overlapping the Corner Rounder far enough.  If you find you’re undercutting the previous scallop, it’s because you’re overlapping too far.  Practice, practice, practice and you’ll get the hang of it!

Here’s a close up of the scalloped edge.

Using Cocoa, stamp the sentiment on a scrap of Colonial White Cardstock.  Using Brown Bag, stamp the quarter circle flourish image in 2nd generation on the lower right corner, and again in 3rd generation on the top left corner.  Using Brown Bag, stamp the bird in 2nd generation.  Using a Foam Tool and Brown Bag distress the edges of all papers.

Using Brown Bag and the long border stamp from the Happy Journey stamp set, stamp around the outer edges of the bases.

Add Cocoa ribbons and embellishments and voila!

Do you like using page maps or page sketches…email me for free sample PDFs of the CTMH How-To Books to try. And…if you’re big into card making, there are how-to books for that too!

Wow. I had no idea this layout was that complicated. You have done such a beautiful job in recreating it. Cutting out the center of that paper, looks like a very complicated process. Thanks for sharing.
