Scrapbook Challenge 75 – Fancy Folds with Cherry-O

By Helen | September 5, 2010

I’m sure you’ve been wondering…Helen, where’s your Heart 2 Heart Challenge this week…well, with my trip and getting caught up…I decided to incorporate the Heart 2 Heart Challenge into this week’s Scrapbook Challenge – consider it a two-for-one!

The Heart 2 Heart Challenge is to use include fancy folds on your card or other projects.  I create a series of interlocking box pleats in two directions to come up with my own “folded paper” that I could use on this scrapbook layout.

This is the Color Celebration pattern on page 30 of the Cherish How-To Book.  Since the fancy folded section is more decoration…I didn’t want to hide it behind photos, so this layout gives it a chance to shine.

The fancy folded section has lots of depth to it.  To balance that, I popped up the Sweet Leaf photo mats, which gave me the ability to create a little pocket for a pull-out journaling block.  I’m thinking this will be a great place to put some of our scoresheets from playing the game May I?

Speaking of May I…which is a version of contract rummy, for the title, I had to get creative.  The stamp set I was using didn’t have a question mark.  I looked at the alphabet and numbers with a creative eye and realized I could use the number 2 and mask off the bottom, then use the period for the bottom of the question mark!  Hooray!

I know…you’re saying Helen…tell us HOW to do those folds….okay, okay…on with the tutorial.

Tutorial

Start with a 12″ x 12″ piece of Tulip cardstock.  On a diagonal, score at 1.5″ from the corner and at 1/4″ from that score.  Tip: Work on the reverse side of the Versamat to have something soft underneath for scoring.

Repeat completely across the paper.  Now, alternately fold up or down (if you do origami, it would be valley and mountain folds).  Tip: I used a quilting ruler which has 45 degree angle lines on it, making it perfect to line up with the outer edges of the cardstock. Your piece will look like this.  Now, open up and lay flat.

Repeat making diagonal score lines in the opposite direction, such that the lines cross the previous lines.  Now fold all those scores as before….and then, for the fun part…fold all scores such that you have a piece like this…

While you could use a very strong adhesive to maintain the folds, I opted to give the piece more interest by adding brads at the intersections.  Tip: Make sure you’re using the piercing tool foam mat underneath to pierce the holes.  To make the brad prongs completely flat, after opening the prongs, use the back end of the piercing tool to push on the center of the open prongs and they’ll go flat!

I went through and put brads on the entire folded piece of cardstock before cutting it.  I was able to get both 4″ x 8″ pieces for this scrapbook layout from the ONE folded piece.  It really is amazing at how much the 12″ x 12″ piece of cardstock will shrink as a result of all the folds.  Take a look here for other fold ideas…and to share YOUR creation!

OH my, Helen, I think I may need a degree in Mathematical engineering to reproduce this! I think it’s one of those things that probably looks harder than it is, am I right? In any event, I have not seen a fancy fold like that before in my travels, it’s awesome! Makes me think of a big soft pillow. Great layout and coloring as well. Glad you could join us this week at Heart 2 Heart!

Helen, this is a neat idea. Pretty much you are saying that a 12×12 ends up as an 8×8? I was wondering if you had a chance to match the new colors with the DMC floss? If so, let me know how close I am with:
    Pacifica 806
    Sky 3761
    Lagoon 3849
Those are the only three I have done so far.
