Serendipity Card 2

By Helen | January 1, 2008

Today I wanted to play with the different flower petal stamp sets and came up with an idea for a 6″ x 6″ card.

Serendipity Card 2

Supplies:

From the second sheet of Dutch Blue Textured Cardstock I cut a 6″ x 12″ strip, then cut that down to (2) 6″ x 6″ pieces - I’ll set one aside for something else and use one for the front of the card.

I want to take advantage of the two colors of the textured cardstock.  How?  What about a nested mat?  That’s it!  I take the 6″ x 6″ piece and position it in my Fiskars Paper Trimmer such that the paper is aligned at the top and BEFORE I put the cutting rail down, I position the cutting blade at the 1″ mark (as shown by the arrow in the photo).  This will give me a 1″ wide mat.

Positioning Cutting Blade for Nested Mat

Since my mat is 1″ wide, I’ll slide the cutting blade down to the 5″ mark…

Making the Cuts for Nested Mat

Now I lift the cutting rail, rotate the paper 90 degrees and repeat until all four sides of the nested mat are cut.  After I cut out the middle square, I flipped it to reveal the lighter side of the textured cardstock and voila!

Nested Mat

Now for the flower.  I love how Close To My Heart designed the flower petal stamps to work together.  For example, the concentric petals and the dots.  See how these can be used together.

Flower Petal Stamps

On a scrap of Bamboo cardstock stamp five of these flower petals and cut out.  I attached the flower petals to the back of a medium size Chocolate diecut circle.

Assembling Flower

When I went to put the flower on the card base, the Dutch Blue flower blended in too much.  I realized I had a 4″ x 4″ square of Chocolate patterned paper.  I opted to cut another nested frame measuring 1/4″ wide.  To do this, I cut from the 3/4″ mark to the 5 1/4″ mark along each side.  Putting the card base together gave me…

Card Base

Now adding the flower…needs something.  Ah…more flower petals!  I stamped the medium sized flower petal in Chocolate and then used the smallest solid flower petal to fill in the middle with Dutch Blue.  I didn’t want the Dutch Blue to be as dark as the front petals.  To make them lighter, I inked up the stamp, stamped it in scrap paper and then stamped on my petal.

Serendipity Card 2

I had a piece of 1/4″ x 6″ Dutch Blue Circle/Flower paper remaining from making previous cuts.  I added that in the bottom (using the reverse side of the paper).  I toned it down a bit by using a sponge dauber with Bamboo ink.  One last thing - stamped the tiny flower in Dutch Blue on a scrap of Bamboo cardstock, cut out and adhered with the words (from the Victorian Snowflakes stamp set).
